SHIPPING GUIDE

FTL or LTL? Start with your freight.

Trailer space is part of the decision. Handling, timing and facility requirements matter too.

Two different ways to use a trailer.

Full truckload generally dedicates trailer capacity to one shipment. Less-than-truckload combines smaller shipments into a carrier’s network. The right choice depends on more than whether your pallets physically fill a trailer.

Consider how the freight will be handled.

LTL freight may pass through terminals and be handled more than once. Packaging needs to protect the product through that process. Secure cartons to pallets, avoid overhang and provide dimensions that include all packaging. Truckload may be worth discussing when product sensitivity or handling requirements call for fewer transfer points.

Be precise about size and weight.

For LTL, measure every handling unit and include accurate weight. Stackability, freight class and NMFC information can affect the evaluation. For truckload, include total weight, pallet count, the amount of deck space needed and any loading restrictions. Do not estimate away a dimension that could change equipment fit.

Explain the receiving facility.

A commercial address does not necessarily have a dock. Mention liftgate needs, restricted access, residential delivery, appointments or a construction site. These requirements should be part of the original quote request rather than a discovery at delivery.

Separate a preference from a deadline.

Tell the brokerage when the freight is ready and when it must arrive. If the date is flexible, say so. A quoted transit estimate and a separately confirmed guaranteed service are different things. Urgent shipments may need an expedited ground discussion.

Compare the whole plan.

Review equipment, expected handling, service requirements and any included accessorials along with the rate. A useful quote makes the assumptions clear. If the shipment changes, ask for those changes to be reviewed before pickup.
